Ice Cream Stop #1 – Jackson Farms, New Salem, PA

We left Brown Hill at 8:30 a.m. after a hearty breakfast of eggs. The sky had dark rain clouds with intermittent sections of blue sky with the sun peeking out. There was a nice breeze in the 68 degree mountain air.

The Summit was 66 degrees. As we descended into Uniontown, we stopped at a new park called The Watering Trough. In Colonial times, people would stop to water their horses here. People still stop to fill up water jugs with the fresh (?) mountain water. It is a lovely park!

At 9:15 a.m, after a 40 minute drive, we arrived at Jackson Farms in New Salem, PA. Gregg and I had toured this local family-run small dairy a few years ago on a Wednesday Walk. Folks rave about their ice cream. We were not disappointed.

The store is a small convenience store which sells deli and hot foods, donuts and ice cream, as well as their dairy products.

For First Breakfast, I had one scoop of coffee ice cream and Gregg had one scoop of sea salt caramel.

Some thoughts are:

Nice and cold and refreshing!
Airy texture
It maintains the homemade ice cream texture. It didn’t crystallize.
The flavors were subtle
I would have preferred a stronger coffee flavor, although Gregg (who doesn’t care for coffee ice cream) thought the flavor was strong.
The sea salt caramel ice cream tasted like a Worthers butterscotch candy. It had nice chocolate covered caramel pieces blended in, which provided the caramel flavor.
